Resident's worry over 'unsafe' wall

A WORRIED Queen's Road resident is furious that nothing is being done about a wall he and a councillor say is highly dangerous.

The piece of ground, which once had the houses of 10 and 11 Queens Road on it, has been empty for more than 40 years since those buildings were demolished.

All that remains is an old wall.

George Morgan, 67 who lives opposite the wall has voiced his concerns about its condition for four years and now he fears its condition is so bad an accident is imminent. He said: "It is a danger to the children who play on the empty land but it is also unsafe for passers-by.

"One part of the wall has started to bulge in the last few weeks with all the rain.

"There are other people concerned about the area, too, it's overgrown like a jungle.

"I think the stones are only kept up by a telegraph pole which, if removed, I am sure would cause the wall to collapse. Soil is constantly expanding and contracting which causes the structure to be pushed out."

Vale Councillor Paul Gray supports Mr Morgan and said: "It has reached the stage where I am embarrassed to tell people that nothing has been done yet.

"At first there was an ownership question. But as so many years have passed and nobody has claimed the land the Vale Council is responsible. I have heard the land is part of a proposed finance project which will involve Penarth Town Council."

A Vale Council spokesman said: "This is one of five sites in the Penarth central renewal area being looked at with a view to a possible future environmental regeneration scheme, it is the subject of ongoing consultation. The wall has been inspected in the recent past and is safe."
