Pier-less

THANK you so much for highlighting the decline of Penarth Pier (June 5 and June 12).

I have had a huge response from people who share my concern. The only problem is that I am inundated with requests for 'the poem' I referred to in the article on June 5th.

So I wonder if it would be possible for you to print it in full on the letters page?

It is good news that the Pier will stay in the hands of the Vale. But I hope this means they intend to paint and repair it ready for refurbishment.

Let us trust that all the eyesores inflicting our seafront will soon be dealt with. Visitors deserve decent standards when spending time and money there.

Penarth Pier 2003 It stands above the pebbly bay A relic of advanced decay Where countless pigeons make their home Inside its faded peeling dome For Alas! No money has been spent On this great Edwardian monument And we see 'The Jewel in our Crown' With shame, now looking so run down "And who is there?" we ask, who will speak Up, for this treasure that's unique To bring back dignity and grace So it can, take pride of place "We are short of funds!" that same old tale Each year comes echoing from the Vale "No money left!" that old, old story For restoring it, to former glory With hope we trust the hand of fate Will act, before it's not too late To find a gallant knight somewhere Who will rescue our beloved pier
