A GROUP of Sully parents have lobbied successfully to obtain a £20,000 Lottery grant to open an after-school club.
The grant, supplied by the New Opportunities Fund, will provide a permanent carer for the children and will also be used to make the venue meet safety standards.
Sully Community Council have agreed that the cricket pavilion, which is already utilised by the youth club, can be used for the after- school club.
Parent and chair of the group of parents Annabelle Cartwright said: "We are very grateful for Sully Council's help and Clybiau Plant Cymru's assistance. We are hoping to start the club in September, but still need to do some work to bring the building in line with safety rules.
"My children will be attending the club, which will be a safe environment for them.
"Parents will know that they can leave their children until they finish work at 5.30pm."
The club will host activities and play areas for the children which will stop them getting bored.
This is the first type of scheme in the Sully area for parents to leave their children after school and will be called S Club.
Clybiau Plant Cymru, an Assembly-funded group to promote after-school clubs, helped the parents obtain the funding.
CPC co-ordinator for the scheme Jane Burdette said: "We have helped other groups in Barry, Llandough and Penarth obtain funding. We are here to provide assistance to these schemes and will be helping further with this club. It was only six months ago the group applied, which is a good turn-around."
Clerk of Sully Community Council Brian Daniels said: "We are happy to help the club and have done so. But the majority of the work has been done by the parents. Six months ago, there was a need for this kind of care in the area so we gladly helped."
