CD Review: Evanescence 'Fallen'

FROM out of nowhere, Evanescence have rocked and swayed their way into the charts, and their debut album Fallen hints they will be staying.

Despite their name, which may suggest the band is a temporary thing, the 11 tracks on this CD tell a completely different story about the young quartet of singers and songwriters from Little Rock, Arkansas.

It is an emotional, ethereal work of undeniable potency guided by the unmistakable vocals of Amy Lee.

Bring Me To Life is the first track that has been released, and it rocketed straight to number one.

Also significant is the vibrant anthem Tourniquet and the eerie Haunted, with its pummelling beats and jarring melodies (augmented by chamber choir arrangements courtesy of Lee).

Lyrically, Evanescence explores dark, introspective themes of love, desperation, and despair, but not so that it makes you want to hide in a dark room, far away from the world. If they carry on in this way, there will be nothing evanescent about them.
