Extracts from the Penarth Times 25 years ago

EXTRACTS from the Penarth Times of January 26, 1979:

Penarth Town Council has held its rate precept steady at 3.5p in the pound for the fifth successive year since local government re-organisation in 1974.

Mrs Ethel Morgan, of Masefield Road, Penarth, has won the £1,000 jackpot in the Vale Council lottery draw, held at B and DM Prisk tobacconist shop, Glebe Street, last Friday.

The estimate cost of a hard surface play area at Seel Park, Dinas Powis, is £5,000, members of the Vale Leisure Services Committee were told.

Mr George Dibble, of Shakespeare Avenue, Penarth, has retired after 50 years service with the Co-operative Society, the last six years as Wine Manager at Leo's, Penarth Road.

Mr George William Merrigan, formerly of Dinas Powis, who has lived in Antwerp for the past 40 years, has had the Decoration du Travail (First Class) conferred on him by King Leopold Baudouin, of Belgium.

A decision on whether or not to provide financial backing for a summer play scheme in Penarth has been deferred by the Vale Leisure Services Committee, until they know if the Welsh Office is willing to help.
