EXTRACTS from the Penarth Times of February 16, 1979:

Two proposals, which it is claimed would alter the character of Penarth Esplanade, have come under fire at separate planning meetings.

President of the Penarth Conservative Ladies' Branch, Mrs I Williams, was presented with a gift to mark her service over 56 years, by the town mayor, Cllr Mrs Susan Thomas.

Cardiff and Wales rugby star Terry Holmes performed the duty of smashing Cogan Hotel Sports and Social Club's giant collecting bottle last Friday, when it was found that through members' generosity it contained £259.39 for the Handicapped Children's Pilgrimage Trust.

Soccer enthusiasts may be surprised to learn that Penarth can boast a Welsh international star born and living in the town. She is 21-year-old Jayne Angove, of Glyndwr Road, who has been chosen by the Welsh Women's Association selectors to play in a forthcoming international against France.

Four patrol leaders of the First Llandough Scout Troop, David Hoole, Jonathan Redbourn, Graham Wardell and James Grenville, have succeeded in gaining their Chief Scouts' Award.
