CD review

THE LIBERTINES have arrived at the top of the charts from nowhere - or so it seems.

They came to the fore first in 2002 with their debut Up the Bracket and this release, called simply The Libertines, is truly an eclectic bunch of tracks.

Co-frontmen Carl Barat and Pete Doherty tackle the problems they are experiencing head on with the opening Can't Stand Me Now. The Libertines is a very listenable CD, a bit Franz Ferdinand, a little Clash, a touch Sex Pistols - even a hint of House Martin-esqueness now and again, but all their own sound underneath.

If you liked the first album, there's a strong chance you will like this one too.

If they go the distance and keep their heads, they might make cult status and that'll help grease their way in the future.
