Post office in the spotlight

LLANDOUGH'S Labour politicians have joined forces this week to seek the views of the public on the future of Llandough post office.

The Post Office has launched a consultation, which could see Llandough post office being closed by January next year because it will not be financially viable in the future.

A six-week consultation is now under way but the closure is proposed to take place in January 2005.

Llandough councillor Peter King, AM Lorraine Barrett and MP Alun Michael want residents' views on the future of the post office.

Cardiff South and Penarth AM Lorraine Barrett said: "No one wants the post office to close. But if it does, we must consider alternatives, particularly as the site will be demolished in the near future anyway as it is very run down and only one shop is left there."

Cllr Peter King said: "Some residents have already suggested a mobile service, if only for a few days a week. We are asking people what they think about the British Legion or the Merrie Harrier running a post office as happens in other villages or even the community council offering the use of the Institute Hall if an operator for a mobile post office could be found." Alun Michael, MP, said: "These are just some suggestions and it's important that Llandough residents have an opportunity to have their say. We hope the people of Llandough will respond to this consultation."

If you are concerned about this issue and have ideas about how a service might be retained then residents are encouraged to write to: Cllr Peter King at 7 Corbett Road,
