One way to eat a French-style meal

IT'S ALL change at the 'One' Bistro on Stanwell Road as continental culture comes to Penarth.

New faces at the restaurant include a chef who has prepared food for the queen and a front-of-house manager who has previously worked at a Michelin-star establishment.

'One' owner Huw Davies said: "We are now open lunchtimes and evenings from Tuesday to Sunday as a bistro. What we now aim to offer is first-rate food and service at affordable prices.

"We are aiming at a menu of top-quality, freshly-cooked food that people can afford to eat on a week night.

"We believe that the type of continental culture you find in the Pontcanna area of Cardiff is now starting to establish itself in Penarth. Lots of young professional people are moving into the town because of the availability of good housing and good schools and its proximity to Cardiff."

New 'One' chef Barry White has prepared food for a list of celebrity names including the queen, Princess Anne, Chris de Burgh and NATO chief George Robertson.

He was also in charge of catering at the International Boat Show in London last year.

Front-of-house manager is Frenchman Antoine Ancia, originally from Bordeaux.

He has worked at Michelin-star Llangoed Hall, at Cecconi's in Mayfair and at Le Gallois in Pontcanna.

Antoine said: "We looking to provide the type of warm, convivial atmosphere you would find in a bistro in France."

The lunchtime menu contains dishes like Welsh lamb stew and dumplings at £6.95 and spicy sausage and tomato pizza at £5.95, while evening main courses range from £8 to £14 in price. Both menus change daily.

On Sundays, traditional Sunday lunches are served with a vegetarian option.

Huw Davies, together with partners Rhodri Williams and Matt Fitzpatrick, also own the Cameo Club in Pontcanna, and the Shot In The Dark caf bar on City Road.

The trio are also opening a new caf bar at the landmark Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay which will also be called 'One'.
