Santa's in town

PENARTH will be getting festive this week as Christmas comes to town in a big way.

The traditional Victorian Fair starts at 5pm on Friday in the Paget Rooms before continuing on Saturday morning at 9.30am, offering shoppers solutions to all their gift conundrums.

And the Vale of Glamorgan Council will flick the switch to startstart the twinkling lights that signify the merry season has begun.

And last but not least will be the arrival of the jolly man himself, as the Penarth Round Table transports Father Christmas into the town centre to give out sweets and goodies to children.

The activities start at 6pm, Santa will arrive at 6.45pm, just in time for the illuminations at 7pm.

But don't worry if you can't remember the whole schedule. Our town crier will be on hand to point you in the right direction.

Found by the Penarth Times in a competition eight years ago, Peter Hill is still donning his unique uniform and ringing his bell for all to hear his proclamations.

Normally shy and retiring, Peter, 49, has been driving for Cardiff Bus for the last 28 years.

But although mild mannered behind the wheel of his bus, the Elfed Avenue resident is far from shy when participating in his role as Town Crier, which he carries out in his spare time.

Peter's vocal skills will certainly be put to the test over the Christmas period, as he promotes the Penarth Christmas festivities on the Friday.

Commenting on his role, Peter said: 'Being town crier is something I really enjoy and you'll be amazed how busy I am during the Christmas season.

I love getting involved in charity events and helping to draw awareness to an occasion. If I'm able to help charities and businesses by doing something I love, then I'm very pleased to do it.'
