Winning start for Vets

Penarth Windsor Mens Tennis Veterans Team got off to a winning start in their winter league season against Treorchy Rhondda Tennis Club.

Captain Bill Ellis partnered the fit-again Peter Owen, who has been struggling for most of the year with a persistent shoulder injury.

Although up against a strong Rhondda pairing in the first round, they battled away to win a number of vital games in the second set.

Alastair Smith and Phil Davies hit good form right away and easily beat the Rhondda second pair.

With honours even after the first round, a tense second round was anticipated.

Ellis and Owen got off to a slow start but hit top form in the second set and beat their opponents well.

With Smith and Davies losing the first set, it was going to be a tight finish. They narrowly lost the second set - making the score two all.

The overall outcome of the match was decided by the actual number of games - Windsor won an excellent match by a close score 33 - 31.
