Anger as street trees are axed

PENARTHIANS are up in arms this week over the Vale council's decision to chop down dozens of trees in their streets.

Dozens of horse chestnut and lime trees have been chopped down and removed from Cwrt-y-Vil Road, Lower Cwrt-y-Vil Road and Baron Road, which have been left almost bare.

Louise Spierling, 42, of Lavernock Road, said: "Tree-lined streets and avenues are such an important part of the Penarth landscape. I only hope this is not the start of something that is going to be carried on across the whole of the town."

Gareth Jones, of Cwrt-y-Vil Road, said: "They have chopped down dozens of trees all in one foul swoop leaving a line of stumps. I think it looks terrible. I'm shocked that they have done this without any consultation whatsoever. I think tree-lined avenues are one of the most attractive features of Penarth. As far as I know these were perfectly healthy, mature trees. I understand that the council intends to replace them with saplings. It will be interesting to see how many of them survive the vandalism we often see around here."
