Boundary upset

SULLY residents are up in arms over their constituency being moved to join South Cardiff.

The village councillors, AM and MP were against the plan to change the boundaries but even a public inquiry, which concluded in their favour, did not stop the change.

Sully Community Council Chairman, Janice Boland said: "It's a disgrace we are put in with Cardiff. Some people are under the impression they are no longer in the Vale of Glamorgan but that is not the case. We will be in the Cardiff South and Penarth constituency. It would even be a good idea to have a new constituency made up."

Vale of Glamorgan Council member for Sully, Anthony Ernest said: "The decision has come as a huge blow to local residents, who had fought bitterly against the move to sideline the village into the artificially sized Cardiff constituency, purely to satisfy the numbers game.

"The reality is that Sully and Lavernock have not the slightest thing in common with South Cardiff, which itself extends as far as the boundary with Newport at St Mellons, and also includes Tremorfa, Llanrumney, Splott, Cardiff Docks and Grangetown.

"A public inquiry was held in the summer at which we were supported by Sully Community Council, Penarth Town Council, the Vale of Glamorgan County Council, John Smith MP and Jane Hutt AM, the Enquiry Commissioner recommended there should be'No Change' to the boundaries of Sully.

"Sully's move into Cardiff South & Penarth was confirmed, to the dismay of the 3,200 electors of this pleasant rural area, who will be affected. This decision strikes at the very heart of this small community."
