Anger at state of facilities

CHANGING rooms at one of the main sports grounds in the Vale are so bad that last week five players'fell through the floor' while taking a shower.

Now the three main sports clubs in Dinas Powys have launched a campaign, after putting up with'disgraceful' facilities for ten years.

They have won the backing of local councillors who say the changing rooms at Bryn Y Don are'held together with bits of string."

Dinas Powys football club, cricket club and rugby club all play there, with a combined total of 33 teams involved. Many of the junior teams have to play home matches in Barry, Wenvoe or Penarth.

In 1991 the changing rooms were put up and are still used today.

The three Dinas Powys sports clubs have been working with local councillors for better changing rooms.

Councillor Chris Franks presented a petition at the Vale Council meeting calling for the rundown temporary changing rooms to be replaced.

He said: "The clubs have shown great commitment to this scheme. We had thought that a Sports lottery grant would have match-funded the Vale Council's contribution. Our hopes were dashed when the bid to the Lottery was turned down.

"This was a blow. I do not think that the Sportlot committee understands how many youngsters play at Parc Bryn y Don. Teams from all over the Vale use the pitches.

"In fact, many local players are forced to play'home' matches outside Dinas Powys."
