A PENARTH school has welcomed new traffic calming proposals aimed at improving the safety of its pupils.
Governors at Stanwell Comprehensive have applauded the Vale of Glamorgan Council for considering a new 20mph zone over part of Salisbury Avenue near the entrance the school.
Governor and Vale councillor Anthony Ernest said: "I think this zone is a good feature and will help to make the walk to school much safer for our school children. You cannot put a price on the safety of children.
"A similar scheme was introduced at Albert Road Primary two or three years ago and that has proved successful.
"The improved proposals tie in with the Vale's Safer Routes To School scheme which aims to provide safe cycle routes to schools. The Evenlode to Stanwell part of this network has been completed, but a further extension linking in other parts of Penarth is in the pipeline."
Clive Williams, also a governor and councillor for the Plymouth ward, said: "This is a very welcome initiative that will make the roads around Stanwell safer though I regret that public money has to be spent simply because a minority of people cannot drive responsibly."
The proposals, on which Penarth Town Council will comment this week, also include a no-waiting at any time order on the junction of Salisbury Avenue and Archer Road.
Road bumps have already been installed along Salisbury Avenue.
