WALES' first purpose-built college to provide education, care and treatment for young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), based in Sully, has welcomed its first student.
Ellis Lewis, 17, a former pupil at Heronsbridge School, Bridgend, became the first person to enrol at the 4 million Beechwood College.
The college is a residential facility for students aged between16 and 25, operating 52 weeks a year, run by Independent Community Living.
Beechwood will eventually house 38 people and there is room to expand.
Principal Mark Hughes said: "This is a wonderful day for us. We have spent many months getting everything and everyone in place.
"We have put together a really enthusiastic staff team in a superb setting, and with more students joining us in the coming weeks and months, we are looking forward to making a real difference to the lives of these young people."
The environment at Beechwood College has been designed to offer maximum flexibility to all students suffering from Autistic Spectrum disorder, including Asperger's Syndrome and other communication difficulties.
It will allow personal growth and development within a structured and safe setting.
Staff have been appointed over the past few months. The specialist team includes teachers, occupational therapists, clinical and educational psychologists and art, music and drama therapists.
Students have access to needs-led care and education packages with extensive communal facilities to help them develop independence and individuality.
Targeted support programmes will be designed to meet the individual needs of students, no matter how complex.
*eisure time will focus on positive exercise and relaxation, encouraging students to have a balanced programme of activities and encourage social interaction within a supported and positive activity programme.
Hobbies and personal interests are encouraged and a weekly plan will be identified for students, which may include such activities as bowling, cinema, arts and crafts, yoga and swimming.
