A PENARTHIAN has declared a one-man war on litter louts, claiming the Vale council is not keeping the town tidy.
Gordon Bell, aged 58, of Countess Place, said: "I spent last weekend cleaning up the terrible mess in the lane running from the Railway station to Stanwell Road.
"The build-up of rubbish had reached an unacceptable level and, combined with the graffiti problem in the area, it had started to look run-down.
"Because of the slow response from the Vale council's waste management department I decided to do something about the problem myself.
"I went down to the lane and filled half a dozen or so black bags with bottles, cans, food remnants and broken glass."
He added: "I think this is a shame because visitors to Penarth would use this lane to get to the town centre,"
"First impressions count and I would hate for people to think of Penarth as a shabby town.
"Also when places are left to look run-down they start to attract the wrong type of people, which can lead to more serious crime being committed."
