Riders are put at risk

LIVES of horse riders and their mounts are being put at risk unnecessarily by speeding, inconsiderate, 'road rage' motorists cutting through Sully Road and adjoining country lanes.

When meeting horses on the road, please pass wide and slow - ie no more than at 10mph and your vehicle should be in second gear.

If the road is too narrow to pass safely, please stop, do not sound your horn or rev your engine. Expect the unexpected and be ready to stop.

Horses are unpredictable animals which are easily frightened and should be treated as a potential hazard.

It is far better for the horse to pass a stationary vehicle than the vehicle trying to squeeze past the horse with just inches to spare and it also only takes a few seconds.

The Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions, in association with The British Horse Society has produced an extremely useful and informative leaflet entitled Horse Sense for Motorists.
