Two win part in film with TV comedy star

TWO teenagers are to star in a movie alongside Frank Kelly from the hit comedy series Father Ted.

Penarth youngsters Charlie Bird, aged 16, and Adam Williams, aged 15, have both been given parts in the film A Day Out With Gwyn, which will be shot at locations in Penarth and other parts of the Vale.

A Day Out With Gwyn is the story of the relationship between a grandfather and his grandson, who spend a day out together which doesn't go according to plan.

The boy is initially embarrassed by his grandfather but then comes to realise that he's actually quite cool.

Frank Kelly played Father Jack in the hit Channel 4 series Father Ted.

Charlie and Adam, both pupils at Stanwell school and students at the Nutopia Chang Actors Studio in Penarth, secured their lead roles following a series of auditions.

Charlie said: "It has been a mad week.

"We had sung on the sound track of a feature film Felix, which was recorded at the studios in Penarth, and we had to sing not only in English, but in German.

"We then recorded a potential theme tune for a new BBC kids series.

"A few days later our acting class was filmed by S4C, and then we had these auditions - luckily both Adam and I got the roles."

Paul West and Kerry Collins, the directors of the film which is due to start shooting in Penarth in February, said the two youngsters stood out from the others who auditioned.

Carol Ireland, also from Penarth, and another student at the Nutopia Chang Actors Studio, has been cast as Charlie's nan in the film.
