Arson wrecks community hall

FIREFIGHTERS have opened an investigation after arson was confirmed as the cause of a fire that threatened to destroy the disused Harbour View community hall.

Firefighters were called at 11.29pm on Friday and crews from Penarth and Cardiff Central fire stations attended the blaze in Royal Close.

The premises was severely smoke-logged, but the blaze was brought under control in approximately 20 minutes, preventing any damage to the structure of the building.

Firefighters used four breathing apparatus', two hose lines and two jets to extinguish the fire, and used a thermal imaging camera to help them see through the smoke.

Firefighter Shaun Doyle, who attended the incident and is investigating the blaze, told the Penarth Times: "I can confirm that a fire investigation was carried out in conjunction with the scenes of crime officer from the police.

"As a result of the investigation, it was identified that there were two seats of fire.

"This matter is now with the police for further investigation to find the culprits, because the cause of this fire was deliberate ignition.

"Unfortunately, in this day and age, arson represents the highest cause of fire in society, especially for certain types of premises like this one.

"The first rule of arson prevention is to keep the premises secure and to keep combustible items to a minimum."
