Seasiders keen to push on in the title race

WITH A success-starved nation being sent into ecstasies by the national team's successes in the Six Nations, next weekend is starting to look a bit flat without any international fixtures.

Not to worry, a more local come-back is still very much under way and Penarth pick up their promotion bid again on Saturday when they welcome ninth-placed Dowlais to the Athletic Field.

The Seasiders have won the last six games on the trot and will be keen to keep the pressure on leaders Fairwater and Aberdare.

Dowlais, on the other hand, have only just broken the pattern of seven consecutive defeats with a 16-13 win over bottom club Rhigos.

Fairwater face a tricky away fixture at fourth-placed Llandaff North, who have fallen off the pace a little as their home record was dented by Taffs Well and Bedlinog.

The leaders themselves have staged a small recovery with a 49-5 win against Taff's Well following their shattering 25-11 defeat at the Athletic Field last month.

Aberdare are looking even shakier, despite recording four narrow wins out of four. They have still to play Fairwater twice, following an earlier postponement and this Saturday's home clash with Cowbridge is their first for the same reason.

With only the key home fixture against Aberdare on April 9 to look forward to, Penarth have little option but to make sure they continue to beat whoever is put in front of them and keep an eye on the results elsewhere.

As the division's top scorers by some distance, entertainment value is almost guaranteed.

This Saturday, Penarth are home to Dowlais in the Lloyds TSB Welsh National League Division 4 (South-East at the Athletic Field, Lavernock Road. Kick-off 2.30pm.
