Great comeback keeps Sports in touch with top

SOUTH WALES SENIOR LEAGUE

FAIRWATER 3

SULLY SPORTS 4

SULLY Sports staged the comeback of the season to take them to within two points of the league leaders.

After hours of heavy rain, the pitch at Fairwater was passed fit for play.

Sully, as in the previous game, started badly.

The home side used the long ball to very good effect, while Sports were content to slowly build up their play.

Fairwater took the lead with a well-taken goal after Sports' defence, slipping and sliding on the surface, were caught out.

Worse was to follow as the visitors' poor marking allowed Fairwater to increase their lead.

Sports were by no means out of the game and looked unfortunate not to have been awarded a penalty.

And just as Sully thought they were getting back in the game, Fairwater again used the long ball well and finished the move with a goal to leave Sports with a mountain to climb.

But this fixture proved to be, as the clich says,'a game of two halves'.

The second half saw Sports start to dominate, with Joe Hinds causing havoc down the left side, combining well with the energetic Ferguson, who started to boss the middle.

Fairwater were forced back, and after a corner Adam Govier dived in to score with a header, to give Sully hope.

The Sports team, now playing well as a unit, looked dangerous every time they attacked, and deservedly scored again when Neil Haggard found space to hammer home.

It was all Sports now, and after good work from Mark Brown and Ferguson, it was Les Harrington who volleyed home the equaliser.

Sully's defence of Brown, Jones, Govier and Thomas held a brief rally from the home team as conditions got worse.

Sports went forward again, and the winner came when Neil Haggard found space and beat the keeper from eight yards.

There was still time for Hinds and Palmer to combine with a final effort blasted over the bar, as Sports looked for more.

The whole team were outstanding in the second half, and were rewarded with the points, which keep them in second place.

The league's top four teams are very close, within two points, as leaders Ynyshir were hammered at home by Cogan,

This Saturday, Sports travel to Cascade against a good footballing team. Leaving at 12.30pm sharp.

The seconds entertain St Athan in the cup, and the Vets are home to Cwm Talog.
