Residents refuse to waste chance

GREEN-MINDED residents can congratulate themselves after recycling in the Vale of Glamorgan increased by 100 percent last year!

And the council, which runs fortnightly kerbside collections, is extending a big thank you to all those people whose efforts have seen the amount of waste being recycled double in just 12 months.

This is a real boost for the council, which has been working to increase awareness of, and participation in, local recycling services to ensure it meets challenging targets set by the Welsh Assembly Government.

Head of Visible Services, Miles Punter, said: "We have made real progress over the past 12 months and, as a result, exceeded the target set by the Welsh Assembly for 2003/04.

"I would like to thank all residents who recycle and staff who provide recycling services.

"We are going to have to work even harder over the next few years to ensure we continue to meet our targets, and hope we can count on the support of all our residents to do this."

Vale of Glamorgan Council Leader Cllr Jeffrey James added: "I am delighted at the council's success and know that the authority will continue to work hard to further improve recycling services for local people.

"An increase of 100 percent is a real achievement and something we can all be proud of."

The council provides a free fortnightly collection of paper, glass and cans to 98 percent of households, and participation in this service is continuing to rise.
