Dramatic start for Nick

WELSH rugby has been dominating the sporting headlines since the start of this year's Six Nations tournament, which saw Wales off to a flying start - and Penarth is playing its own part in the drama.

Local sports star Nick Gill played for the Wales Under 19s team that defeated Ireland 37-6 at Bedwas on March 4.

Despite Wales dominating the game, Nick's attacking opportunities were limited.

Nick, who is hoping to go to university in September, is enjoying a year out to develop his rugby skills.

Having been selected to join the Cardiff Blues Development Academy last August and registered by Mike Rayer to play for Cardiff RFC in the Wales Premier League, Nick has had mixed fortunes during the early months of the season, including a six-week break following an appendicitis.

However, Nick was invited to join the Crawshays Welsh XV, playing at the International Invitation Sevens in Dubai, in December, as well as playing for Crawshays at Cambridge University and Devonport Services.

Nick's most recent outings for Cardiff RFC have included full matches against Llanelli, Aberavon and Newport, so a lot of experience has been gained.

Having played for Penarth Youth RFC for the previous two seasons, he was pleased that the Penarth Youth chairman, Mr E I Owens, and last season's coaches, Duncan Mottram and Paul Follon, along with a number of this season's Penarth Youth Squad and other friends, were able to come along and offer support at Bedwas.
