Memories

IT is very interesting to read in your newspaper about the number of cinemas that were in Penarth.

Mainly the Windsor Kinema owned by Mr Wilmore, during the period of silent films and the very good orchestra.

My Dad, Mr Albert Massey, an excellent musician, was the trumpet player.

But my reason for writing is: does anyone remember the blacksmith in Windsor Lane, behind the police station?

This was owned by my Dad and a very hard-working man he was. He had this blacksmith's for many years.

I can remember my mother taking me to see Dad at his work. I was about five years old then.

It was wonderful to see Dad use the big bellows to pump the fire.

But when motors started to come in work was not so brisk and Dad closed his blacksmith shop.

He then had a position as a farrier with the Penarth Council, still with the horses which he loved, this time the big shire horses. He looked after them well and groomed them til their skin shone.

He retired at over 65 years of age, with animals he loved.
