Grant for youths

ORGANISERS of the Penarth Youth Project are celebrating after receiving a 50,000 grant from the Welsh Assembly Government.

The money will be used to give the Penarth Youth Project centre on Stanwell Road, which is known as the Info Shop, a complete overhaul. A relaunch party will be held on April 16.

*isa Nelmes, manager of the project, said: "We are delighted to have been awarded the funding which will be used to give the Info Shop a complete revamp.

"Part of the Info Shop will be turned into a coffee shop, and we are also having a music/DJ room which will give young people the opportunity to create their own music. We will be having a music evening every Wednesday.

"There will also be a new plasma-screen TV, X-boxes, playstations and new PCs."

After April 16 the Info Shop will be open from 3pm to 9pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays and from 3pm to 5pm on Thursdays.

The funding will be provided by the WAG's Penarth Reserve Fund.

The Penarth Youth Project works with young people aged 11 to 25 and provides a counselling service, computer access for homework, career development, Duke of Edinburgh Award Schemes, volunteering opportunities and health promotion.

The centre also provides information on education, employment and training, family and relationships, the environment, health, housing, law and rights, money and sport and leisure.

The Healthzone project, run from the centre and funded by Camelot, looks to recruit young parents and young people to act as peer educators for its sexual health programme.
