Dinas dedication rewarded with league championship

BT/DRT NATIONAL YOUTH LEAGUE DIV 2S

Old Illtydians 0

Dinas Powys 25

DINAS Powys Youth went to Rumney recreation ground for their final league game of the season needing a win to secure the Division 2S title.

Dinas kicked off against the slope and tore into the opposition, cheered on by support from the sidelines.

Within five minutes of play, hooker James Davies crashed over in the left hand corner for the first try, but in doing so took an accidental blow to the head, which resulted in him having to be substituted due to slight concussion.

This spurred Dinas on towards a second try, and great work by the forwards set up second row James Thomas to cross, which went unconverted.

There were fine individual performances from wing Huw Liddell, flankers Rhys Gambold and Scott Davies, also the front three of Tom Patterson, Owen Stark and Dav Church.

Ashley Morgan crowned a great captain's performance by scoring the third try to make the half-time score 15-0.

In the second half Old Illtyds threw everything they could at Dinas, but the defence stood firm, and all replacements were used to give all of the squad a chance to play their part.

Carl Riley took an intercepted pass and ran unopposed for 30 metres to score under the post. Lewis Morgan converted the try and hit a penalty to make the final score 25-0 and secure the Division Two title.

After last season's record of no league wins, to only losing one this season, all of the hard work has paid off for the squad and coaches.

Many thanks to everyone connected to the team, including coaches Will, Tommy, Dave and Steve, also help from first team coaches John, Tony and Tim.

Thanks to sponsors O4 E S D Howden, the Pemberton brothers for their support, a big thanks to Brynmor and Viv Stark for resurrecting a youth side three years ago. And finally to Cameron, Graham and Dave for providing match day catering.
