Fair Trade statusnot all that fair

IT is commendable that Councillor Mark Wilson (Penarth Times, April 14) wants Penarth to achieve the status of being a'Fairtrade Town'.

And whilst I certainly have no objection to retail and other commercial establishments offering Fairtrade products to those customers who wish to purchase them, I would most certainly have an objection to the Town Council or any other organisation in receipt of public funding, using taxpayers' money on Fairtrade products.

Far better for the taxpayer is if the councillors and others pay the price difference on the Fairtrade products out of their own pockets - and of course, any extra cost so incurred by the councillors not to be refundable through expense claims.
