Wine offer not a grape deal

AN eagle-eyed shopper has discovered that a wine offer from a major retailer with a branch in Penarth is not all that it seems.

The Local on Windsor Road, which is part of the Thresher Group, is currently offering customers a deal where they get three bottles of wine for the price of two.

But the price of many of the wines available as part of deal have been increased significantly in recent weeks, which means customers are not making much of a saving at all.

Marilyn Bendon, of Cornerswell Road, said: "Earlier this week I had a dinner party and bought three bottles of wine from The Local.

"I was told all wine in the shop was on offer at three for the price of two, and not having a lot of time I chose what I would regard as a special treat because of the deal. Later in the week I returned to the shop for my normal weekend wine and noticed that the prices had gone up by a few pounds per bottle.

"I was told that this was because of the deal. A member of staff told me that the champagne had been increased by 5 a bottle because of the deal.

"I feel as though I've been hoodwinked."

Alex Ansan, a spokesperson for the Thresher Group, said: "For some time we have been struggling to compete with supermarkets on single bottle prices and have had to rethink our strategy. Yes, the price of some individual wines has increased recently.
