What great waste!

THE Vale of Glamorgan Council is holding three roadshows to mark National Compost Awareness Week.

The national event runs from May 1 to May 7, and the council's Waste Awareness Officers will be on the road visiting three different Vale locations to tell residents about the benefits of composting at home.

The roadshows will also help support the council's ongoing What's In Your Bin campaign to encourage all residents to recycle their household waste.

Barry Farmers Market, King Square, Saturday April 30, 10am - 1pm;

Glebe Street, Penarth, Friday May 6, 11am - 2pm;

Cowbridge Farmers' Market, Saturday May 7, 10am - 1pm;

To celebrate National Compost Awareness Week, the Council is also offering you the chance to get your hands on half-price home compost bins.

The bins come in two designs and three sizes and range in price from just 10 to 13.50 - less than half the price you would pay in most shops.

They are available to collect from participating local garden centres or can be delivered for an extra 4.95.

Up to 20 percent of household rubbish is kitchen and garden waste and this can easily be turned into compost at home.

Materials that can be composted include: uncooked fruit and vegetable waste, tea bags and coffee grounds, egg shells and cardboard egg boxes, small amounts of paper and cardboard, grass cuttings, hedge and shrub clippings, old plants and flowers.

Waste Awareness Officer, Helen Ball said: "Making compost at home is a great way of saving money and also provides an environmentally friendly way of reducing your rubbish."
