Sully into second round

SULLY Centurions, beaten by the weather on Saturday, started their cup campaign in superb style on Sunday with a convincing victory at Usk by 68 runs in the National Cockspur Cup.

Centurions travelled on Sunday to the well-appointed ground of Usk for the Cockspur Cup played over 45 overs per side.

Skipper Jamie Sylvester won the toss and elected to bat first. Despite the early loss of Ryan Sylvester for 2 and Owen Dorking for 11, Centurions progressed steadily.

After Jamie Sylvester had been dropped, he and Mike O'Shea looked in fine early season form. With the score on 110, O'Shea was caught off Kear for an impressive 51.

Jamie continued to play the anchor role and with Lloyd Smith they added 48 runs for the fourth wicket .

In the 38th over Jamie, hampered by a few broken toes, saw his innings come to an end when he was lbw to Walkins for 54.

Smith put bat to ball and with Newbold gave an excellent demonstration of how to run quick singles as they added 24 vital runs before Smith was lbw for 37.

Gage joined Newbold and in the remaining 16 balls they added 21 important runs with Gage hitting a huge six to take Centurions to 205-5 at the end.

Usk's reply started disastrously as Ryan Sylvester made up for his failure with the bat, by bowling the hard hitting Davidson for 1 in his second over.

Two more wickets fell at 24 before Centurions were held up by a 49-run partnership between Tamplin and Waters.

With the score on 94 Tamplin was bowled by Dawkins for 38 and the floodgates opened. Waters went to Jamie Sylvester for 20, Perrett was well caught by Sullivan off Sylvester for 6, R Rees and D Rees were bowled by Dawkins and Mike O'Shea took a fine catch on the boundary.

Centurions 205-5, Usk 138 ao.

Will all Juniors please note practice will be on Tuesday next week because of the Bank Holiday.
