Fire service starts summer safety iniative

AMONG the calls attended by Penarth Fire Station in the last month were:

Two cars involved in a road traffic collision on Leckwith Road. Firefighters had to use hydraulic cutting equipment to remove the roof of one of the vehicles in order to gain access. Two female occupants were then carefully extricated using spine boards and taken to hospital by ambulance.

A full emergency call to Cardiff International Airport for a plane that had radioed ahead to report smoke in the cockpit. The plane, a Boeing 777, landed safely and was dealt with by airport fire crews.

The Chemical Incident Unit was called to a barn fire in Pyle when it was discovered the structure contained asbestos. Decontami-nation of fire crews from Bridgend and Porthcawl was carried out when the fire was extinguished.

A shed on fire on Wordsworth Avenue, Penarth. The fire had totally destroyed the shed and was in danger of spreading to neighbouring properties along adjoining fences. Firefighters used a hose-reel jet to extinguish the fire and stop the spread before more property became involved.

l Penarth firefighters can visit your property to fit free smoke alarms, offer advice on escape plans and general fire safety. If you would like a home visit ring 0800 328 1830 to book an appointment.

Now the warmer weather is here barbecue season is upon us. Keep yourself safe by remembering:

*Use approved lighter fluid, don"t use too much, and never spray lighter fluid onto a lit barbecue.

*Take extra care when children and animals are near.

*Make sure the ground is level and stable with nothing overhanging.

*When finished make sure the barbecue is completely out.
