Draw sums up Dinas frustrating campaign

WELSH LEAGUE DIVISION 1

DINAS POWYS 2 BETTWS 2

Saturday, May 14, 2005

A LARGE crowd turned up for this last game of the season to see Dinas lead 2-0 for much of the game, only to be pegged back in the final six minutes.

The home side got the upper hand and it was no surprise when Nathan Hosgood won the ball in midfield, threaded the ball through to Jamie Dix and his shot from 20 yards just about made it into the net for his 17th goal - despite being injured for much of the season.

In the second half, with Dinas on top and playing some good football, Alex Skinner in the home goal cleared the ball to Jamie Dix on the right of the area, his inch perfect cross found James Harries who fired home from 12 yards. In the 84th minute the referee awarded Bettws a penalty for what looked like a fair tackle on the edge of the area.

Joff Wile converted sending Alex Skinner the wrong way.

Bettws scored the equalizer in the 87th minute through Carl Rayner, whose netted from 20yds.

This game just about summed up Dinas's season - nearly there but not quite.

WELSH LEAGUE RESERVE EAST

Treowen Stars 0 Dinas Powys 2

Dinas made the long journey to Treowen knowing that victory would secure runners-up spot in the league.

Dinas's preparations were hit when Peter Bennett (Jaws) got injured in the warm-up. This meant that Dinas had to reorganise the team minutes before kick off.

Some 20 minutes into the game Dinas were forced into a change again when Lamb twisted his ankle on the poor playing surface, which meant the introduction of Herniman into the Dinas attack. With the score goalless at half time the management duo of Garland and Butler demanded more passion in the second period.

This seemed to have the desired effect with Dinas tightening up in all departments. Then 15 minutes into the half Dinas introduced the now recovered Bennett for Taylor.

Minutes later Dinas were ahead when Cowan and Herniman combined for Herniman to thread a neat ball through to Dix whomade no mistake with a good finish from 12 yards.

Two minutes later Dinas extended their lead when Herniman scored.

With 20 minutes left on the clock Reeves replaced the tiring Dix up front and worked tirelessly in chasing down the home defence.

The last 10 minutes saw Dinas defend strongly with Bettles, Carpentier and O'Brien commanding at the heart of the defence

Richie Garland and Andy Butler were delighted to finish the season on a high note and would like to thank all the players who have been involved with the second team throughout the season.
