The new mayor is Charles Curran, Labour councillor for the St Augustine's ward, his deputy will be Mark Wilson.

Cllr Curran, aged 72, only joined the council in May 2004.

He said: "I am surprised and very honoured to become mayor. As a council we will of course be doing all we can to promote the interests and well-being of the citizens of Penarth.

"One key objective is to make sure we meet the needs of our young people."

The mayor's chosen charities this year are Marie Curie, the Sea Cadets and the Dogs Trust.
