Rain can't dampen clubs 120th birthday

PENARTH Lawn Tennis Club opened its doors to the community with its Play Tennis event - and also celebrated its 120th birthday.

The double celebration focused both on the past and on the present.

A re-enactment of an 1880s tennis match provided an historical perspective, as four members donned period tennis attire for a grass court game.

And while the weather somewhat dampened spirits, it was not hard to imagine how the club must have looked all those years ago.

And in complete contrast, the club organised an inter-club'teenage tennis night' the previous evening, when youngsters from tennis clubs across South Wales came together for a doubles tournament.

They were then entertained in the clubhouse by two Penarth teenage rock bands - The Elite and Counterfeit Heroes.

The clubhouse had probably never witnessed such an event before and judging by the animated and enthusiastic audience reaction, it was clearly a big success.
