Support cadets

ROY le Gros is quite right to say that any community needs youth organisations that provide a "broad range of supervised youth activities" for young people (Penarth Times, May 19).

He is completely wrong however when he claims that Penarth Sea Cadet Corps has been sadly neglected for ten years. If it had not been for a small but dedicated team of people, the Sea Cadets in Penarth would not have survived at all.

Mr le Gros is lucky to have taken over the cadets when their numbers are healthy and, I trust, still rising, and their financial situation is sound.

Penarth Sea Cadet Corps is a charity, it is not funded by the government, and although the Royal Navy provides uniforms, stores and training facilities, the upkeep of the headquarters in Stanwell Crescent has to be paid for by fundraising.

Mr le Gros and his team are wished every success in their attempts to keep this most important youth organisation going. They deserve the support of all.
