Last week success for Windsor

THE final week of the Summer Doubles League has, overall, been a very successful one for the Windsor Ladies Tennis Teams.

Although the second team lost a close encounter with Radyr II who are top of their division, both the first and third teams were more successful.

The Ladies third team played two matches last week - on Tuesday they were at home to Lisvane II and on Thursday they were away against St Fagans.

The Tuesday team of Barbara Dawes and Alice Randall, Jennifer Davies and Steph Rees, Lynne Hall and Amy Hooper were in fine form and demolished the opposition from Lisvane six matches to nil, with the loss of only 24 games in all six matches.

The Thursday team encountered stiffer opposition from St Fagans but the Windsor team of Barbara Dawes and Alice Randall, Gwenda Davies and Lynne Hall, Beth Hughes and Esme Williams emerged winners by four matches to two.

The Ladies first team were at home against Allt yr Yn II on Sunday morning. This was a "must win" match for the Windsor team who had led the division all season until last week when they lost to Rhiwbina.

The outcome of this match would decide which team would win the division.

The Windsor team started strongly and all three couples Avril Morgan and Kay Clarke, Linda Ellis and Gill Latham, Margaret Richmond and Cathy O"Doherty won their first round matches.

Although Linda and Gill lost to the Allt yr Yn first couple, both Avril and Kay and Margaret and Cathy won their second round matches.

This meant that Windsor had won the match in two rounds with the final result after three rounds being 6-3.

The Windsor Open Tournament is now in the final rounds with quarter final and semi final matches being played this week.

The tournament will culminate in Finals Day which is being held on Saturday, July 16 and will be followed by a barbecue. Finals will start at 2pm - so come along and enjoy some exciting tennis.
