Legion joins congregation

ON Sunday, July 10, the members of the Royal British Legion in Penarth and their guests joined with the congregation of All Saints Church to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.

The service was conducted by the rector Rev Peter Cox, who is also the chaplain of the RBL in Penarth, ably assisted by new curate the Rev Elaine Evans.

Peter spoke of the belief in freedom and justice which inspired those who gave so much for us in the war years.

He emphasised that we in turn should strive to live according to those principles and in so doing will make sure that their sacrifice was not in vain.

He also stressed how grateful we should be that we have not been involved in a worldwide conflict over the last 60 years, and how we should keep the memory of those events and of the people who fought in them alive for future generations.

The standards of the Royal British Legion Penarth, the Barry Branch of the Merchant Navy Association in Wales, HM Coast Guards and the Penarth Scouts association were present at the altar during the service.

Among the guests were Her Majesty's Deputy Lord Lieutenant Duncan Cantley, Mrs Lorraine Barratt AM and the mayor of Penarth Cllr Charles Curran.

This being by tradition Sea Sunday, a prayer was said for the safe keeping of those who make their living on the oceans of the world.
