Depleted Penarth pull through to win

PENARTH 1st XI travelled to the Diamond Ground without a few key players to face a Cardiff team who themselves were lacking a few of their top players.

After winning the toss, Penarth chose to bat and they collapsed to 20-4 with Hughes (1), Morgan (8), Docherty (0) and Vaughan-Davies (0) failing although Morgan and Docherty were done by handy trigger-work by umpire Shah.

Ex-Cardiff Peter Goodfellow and skipper Ricketts then put on 58 until Ricketts was stumped for a handy 39.

Second team captain Dave Stevens joined Goodfellow, but swiftly departed for 7, Goodfellow finally went for a solid 41, and was followed by Rhys Morgan after a thrusting 23, which included one huge 6. Parkinson (17), Crimp (31n.o.) and Frost (2n.o.) took the Bears to a competitive total of 191-9.

Cardiff"s innings started after one of the worst teas ever, with Alex French departing LBW to Frost for 3.

Richard Almond (18) fell to Docherty but not before Ricketts dropped a dolly off Dave Kirtley who went on to win the game with 120 no.

Weston fell to a superb catch from Jack Parkinson and it was left to Buttigieg (25n.o) and Kirtley (120n.o) to bring the game home.

Although it seems less and less like Dave Stevens" 2nd team, they still managed a comfortable win against Cardiff.

Penarth batted first and captain Pete Docherty scored an excellent 75, and after Edwards departed first ball, Matthew Slugg came in and scored a handy 41.

Contributions by Sidford (16), Davies (17), Stephens (24) and a splendid 25n.o. by new all-rounder Andy Prickett, meant that they ended up on 243-8.

Cardiff"s reply looked to be ominous until Bridgeman departed for 49 and Day fell for the same score. Cardiff reply finished on 188, 55 runs short.

Penarth 3rd XI lost away at Mountain Ash. Batting first, Penarth scored 185 with Nick Hutchings scoring a brilliant half century with many contributions from elsewhere.

Mountain Ash"s reply always looked steady and although decent spells from Rhys Goodfellow (2-26) and captain Akhtar (3-36), Mountain Ash reached the target with 3 overs and 3 wickets to spare.

Penarth 4th XI beat Mountain Ash who only brought seven players with them. Penarth batted first and scored 254-6 with Phil Ward (65), Rob Hastings (38), Huw Morgan (36) and James Ward (20) the main contributors.

Mountain Ash ended up on 148-5.
