Graham rakes in top student prize

GOING back to school was a daunting task for Penarth man Graham Broughton - so winning a prestigious accolade for his efforts came as a great surprise.

Graham, aged 45, who lives in Salop Street with his wife Jane, was awarded the Bryan Savage award after finishing his two-year NVQ course in amenity horticulture at the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff (UWIC).

Bryan was a former course lecturer who died several years ago.

According to the present course tutor, Ann Waters, Graham was chosen for the award for being "such an outstanding student in every respect".

Ann said: "Graham was a mature student, so found it more difficult to fit in than most. But he really applied himself, completed his coursework and practical work, and most importantly, came to college on time.

"Graham is a lovely person and you couldn't possibly not get on with him."

Graham has worked for Caxton Facilities Management in St Mellons for the past nine years.

According to Graham, he has always been a keen gardener, and when his boss suggested he undertake the course, he jumped at the chance.

"It was definitely an interesting experience being a mature student," said Graham. "But it was worth it because I love gardening. I was absolutely delighted when I found out I'd won the award, but didn't really think I deserved it," he added.
