David's historical tip from Nelson

AN unusual piece of Nelson memorabilia has fallen into the hands of a Penarth man.

The decorative tip of a walking stick that once belonged to Lord Nelson has come into the possession of David Drennan, of Stanwell Road.

Mr Drennan said: "Nelson ordered a set of walking sticks to be made from the oak of one of his ships, and the ship's bell was melted down to provide the tips.

"We discovered the tip as children. It has been in our family for generations.

"It was kept in a trunk with artefacts belonging to my father from the First World War.

"I have been in touch with the National Nautical Museum in London and they have shown an interest in the piece."

This year a series of events has been organised around the country as part of the Sea Britain Festival, marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

The weekend saw celebrations in Cardiff Bay and on the barrage - see pages 10 and 11.
