DINAS POWYS 1 BARRY TOWN 0
DINAS POWYS beat visiting Barry Town 1-0 in a keenly fought local derby match in the Welsh League Division 1 on Tuesday evening.
After having had a poor season last year, both clubs are desperate to get back to the standards they have set themselves in previous years, so it was no surprise that this was a hard-fought game with just the one goal deciding the outcome.
The first 15 minutes were fairly even with the Villagers' Jason Cowans prominent, providing chances for Jamie Dix who shot low and wide and Paul Carro whose shot was saved by Marty Ellacott in the Barry goal.
Their reply was a quickly taken Leon Jeanne free kick, deflected for an unproductive corner. In the 16th minute Nathan Hosgood won the ball on the right side of the area and shot across goal but no Dinas player was able to get the final touch.
Three minutes later a Dinas corner was headed towards goal by Liam Jones but Paul Light was on hand to clear the ball off the line.
The Dinas defence were managing to deal with the threat of the Barry attack; on one occasion Jon Carpentier forced Leon Jeanne to retreat back to the edge of his own penalty area before offloading the ball.
In the 32nd minute the busy Rikki Morgan broke clear down the left and crossed but Jamie Dix completely missed his shot when well placed.
Six minutes later the breakthrough finally came for Dinas when Jason Cowans and Nathan Hosgood interchanged passes with Nathan crossing and Liam Jones gleefully heading into the net.
Barry's reply was a low shot well saved by Richie Johnson, and an Ali Kiyaga shot from 30 yards going well wide.
Dinas continued to have the upper hand in the second half, and in the 62nd minute Liam Jones broke from the edge of his own area running the length of the field before crossing, and the Barry keeper saving under pressure from Rikki Morgan.
Both sides were now using their substitutes in a game played at a high pace.
In the 84th minute Barry had arguably their best chance when the strong Ohene Na Quinhare forced his way into the area and shot, but Richie Johnson in the Dinas goal was equal to it.
In the 93rd minute Dinas almost had the last word when Paul Carro crossed and Ramos Karvouniaris put a powerful header just wide.
For Dinas this was a good win against a strong Barry side who will cause teams a lot of problems this coming season.
