Music star wins prestigious prize

PENARTH'S young musical star 19-year-old Mali Llywelyn, of Victoria Road, is celebrating continued success - after picking up a 3,000 scholarship and a prestigious prize.

Mali, the current holder of the Vale of Glamorgan Young Musician of the Year trophy, won the instrumental Blue Riband competition for the over 19 age group at this year's National Eisteddfod in Bangor.

The panel of judges at the Eisteddfod invite the three best performers over all instrumental groups - piano, harp, woodwind, brass and strings - to compete for this prize

And Mali won, with performances of Beethoven's Sonata No 12 and Chopin's Ballade No 3 on the piano.

The prize includes the 3,000 Peggy and Maldwyn Hughes scholarship, which will benefit Mali when she starts her B Music course at the Royal Academy in London next month.
