THERE were tears of joy at Penarth's two comprehensive schools this week as students tore open their GCSE results.
Both St Cyres and Stanwell comprehensive schools reported excellent results.
Mr Lewis, deputy head at Stanwell, said: "Following last week's outstanding results at A-level, Stanwell students have repeated the success at GCSE.
"Almost 30 per cent of the entries were grade A and 80 per cent of entries were grade C or better. More than 700 A grades were awarded to Stanwell pupils.
"And 99 per cent of our entrants passed at grades A to E. Once again 80 per cent of Stanwell pupils achieved five or more A to C grades.
"There were many outstanding individual achievements," he added.
"The examination board has informed us that Alex Latham was in the top five of over 32,000 candidates sitting French, and that Alysia Sawicka achieved full marks for all components in mathematics (250 out of 250).
"Alysia's A* in maths was one of 13 awarded to her."
Anna Symonds was awarded 11 A*s and 2 As, Jeremy Evans 10 A*s and 2 As, Hayley Gles 10A*s and 2 As and Nishat Lal 10 A*s and 1 A.
Nishat said: "I worked very hard but my results still came as a big surprise. I am so pleased.
"I am coming back to Stanwell next year to sixth form and after school I would like to train as a primary school teacher."
Mr Lewis added: "Staff and pupils are delighted with these outstanding achievements, resulting in more than 180 pupils enrolling to enter Stanwell's sixth form for September."
