Goalkeeper shuts out Dinas attack

DINAS POWYS 0

PORT TALBOT 2

THIS Welsh Cup first round match was always going to be a difficult game for Dinas, who faced Welsh Premier League side Port Talbot last Saturday.

The home side battled well against a physically strong team and the goal-scoring ability of the opposing centre forward was the difference between the teams.

Dinas started strongly in front of a crowd strengthened by youngsters from the Junior Section of the club, who were to play a mini football game at half-time.

A Rikki Morgan through ball was collected by Marty Ellacott in the Port Talbot goal and when the same player took a free-kick to Liam Jones, his shot was easily saved by the keeper.

Port Talbot's reply came with a cross from the right, headed wide of goal by Andrew Pearson. After 11 minutes, Liam Jones should have done better with a 25-yard shot wide of the goal after Rikki Morgan had won the ball in midfield.

Port Talbot were beginning to exert more pressure on the Dinas defence and their first goal came in the 25th minute, when a Leigh De-Vulgt long throw was missed by a defender and Rhys Griffiths got a touch at the near post to score.

Within five minutes they had doubled their lead when the same player headed in from a corner from the left.

The Dinas reply came predictably from Nathan Hosgood, who beat three defenders and crossed for Liam Beddard at the far post, but his shot was pushed away by the keeper for an unproductive corner.

Ten minutes into the second half, a Dinas attack down the right involving Jason Cowan, Paul Carro, and Rikki Morgan was cleared by the defence.

With Port Talbot seemingly happy to sit on their lead, the game descended into a bit of a stalemate until two-goal Rhys Morgan appeared to lead with his elbow in a challenge on Kurt Bettles and was sent off for a second bookable offence.

This was just the spur the home side needed and they took the game to Port Talbot, but their keeper foiled two good attempts on goal.

The one-man advantage was short-lived when Nathan Hosgood was dismissed with ten minutes left. Dinas continued to take the game to the Premier League side in the remaining minutes, with Liam Jones heading wide from a corner and the same player forced a save from the keeper after Kurt Bettles had headed across goal.

To continue the progress of the club, the Youth Team (U19) are to play in the new Welsh League Youth League and the club is looking for a coach/manager to work with the current squad.

The club also has a side playing in the Vale of Glamorgan League, Premier Division, and are also looking for a manager for this side.
