Knill shakes off injury for great performances

SEPTEMBER was a great month for Knill Baird-Murray and confirmed his return to form after long term injury.

The new sylph-like Knill led the runners from Penarth and District Runners home in the club championship race at the Cardiff 10k where he recorded a superb 38 minutes and 20 seconds.

However, that was only a warm up for the Swansea Bay 10k on Sunday, September 25 where he ran 36:57, his fastest 10k for 15 years.

Knill has been very patient with an Achilles injury which has really hampered his running over a long period and it is great to see him back running so well again.

As he is a regular on the cross country circuit this also augurs well for the club in this winter's Gwent League.

At Swansea he became the first Veteran Man from the club to beat Clem since Clem turned vet, Clem completing the course in 38:33.

Back at Cardiff 10k there were five other runners from Penarth and Dinas. These were Neil Henry 45:36, Jo Laity 46:55, Steve Hill 47:37; Lisa Cleary 48:13 and Mike Renwick 51:03.

Joining Knill and Clem in Swansea were Lisa Cleary 48:59 and Janice Clement 55:20.

Mike Renwick started but a long term calf problem flared up and he will need to take a leaf out of Knill's book and get it sorted once and for all.

Not content with running these two 10ks in September Lisa Cleary also took part in the Llanelli Duathon.

This was a 5k run followed by a 30k bike ride and then followed by another 5k run. Lisa was the first lady vet in this event.

She has been enjoying some great success in these multi-discipline events over the summer.

Steve Hill also joined Lisa on the trip to Llanelli for the duathon.

The next main event for the club is the Cardiff Half Marathon on October 9.

The club is still going from strength to strength, but there is room for new members.

To encourage this the club offers a two week free trial for runners to come along and take part in the organised sessions before deciding whether to join.

If you are interested the club meets at Cogan Leisure Centre on the balcony above the main hall from 6.45pm and is out running by 7.10pm.

Go along if you are interested or call the secretary Clem on 029 2070 3240.
