RESIDENTS in Dinas Powys are petitioning against plans to build a four-bedroom house in the garden of a property on Cardiff Road - which they say will eat up part of a children's play area.
But the applicant says the development will only involve a minor incursion onto the green space currently owned by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
An application to build the second property in the garden of 171 Cardiff Road near the George's Row playground has now been submitted to Vale planners.
Dinas councillor Chris Franks said: "As I understand it, having spoken to officers at the Vale, the parks department will have to agree to sell off some of the land in order for this application to go ahead.
"A lot of people in the area are unhappy about the proposal because it will mean losing part of the play area."
Local resident Roger Mugford, who is opposed to the development, said: "The play area which contains swings and a roundabout is much valued by local people as a safe place for children to play.
"The application involves taking up part of this green space to build a driveway for the new house - in my view cars passing will make the area less safe for children.
He added: "Also, building a new home at the bottom of a garden is over-development and it will look out of place."
