Going green

RESIDENTS using the Vale of Glamorgan Council's kerbside garden waste collection service have recycled a massive 255 tons of waste in just three months.

The council is saying a big thank you to all residents who have used the service and who have helped turn waste equivalent to 255 elephants or 255 family cars into compost.

Launched last April, the service takes all garden waste collected at the kerbside to Penllyn Estate Farm, in Cowbridge, for composting.

This compost is then used on the farm, providing an environmentally friendly method of waste disposal.

A further 1,490 tonnes of garden waste has been brought to the council's household recycling centres at Llandow and Sully

Cllr Geoff Cox, Cabinet member for visible services, thanked residents for helping to reduce the amount of green waste ending up in landfill.

He added: "Using the kerbside collection service is not the only way of disposing of green waste - residents can also buy reduced-rate composting bins and recycle their garden waste at home.

"Home compost is excellent for the garden and best of all, once you've got your bin, it's free.

"For those who don't have room for a bin or have large amounts of garden waste, using our kerbside collection and household recycling centres is the next best thing."

Residents wishing to use the kerbside collection service can buy white biodegradable garden waste bags, priced 85p for two, from the following council offices: Civic Offices, Holton Road, Barry; Cashiers Office, Eastgate, Cowbridge; Cashiers Office, Baron's Close, Llantwit Major; Penarth Office, Stanwell Road, Penarth.

Multiples of 10 are also available to buy by post.

Residents are reminded that the council no longer collects black bags containing garden waste.
