Call for action over accident blackspot

VALE planners are proposing to put a traffic island at the accident blackspot on Lavernock Road where a 76-year old woman lost her life last month.

Cllr Maureen Kelly-Owen said that plans for the proposal had reached an advanced stage and should go before the planning committee early next year.

Cllr Kelly-Owen said: 'It is clear that something has to be done to prevent further tragedies on that bend.

"Despite speed restrictions, traffic travels too quickly along Lavernock Road, and the sightlines on the junction of Lavernock Road and Westbourne Road are extremely poor.

"Vehicles taking that bend have smashed into the wall of one resident of Westbourne Road on at least six occasions.

"We also have to take into account that over the years the volume of traffic using Lavernock Road to gain access to Cardiff has increased enormously owing to major residential development in the Barry area,' she added.

"I think a roundabout would offer a good solution for slowing traffic down. An alternative would be to install a set of traffic lights there."

Cllr Clive Williams, Vale cabinet member for Social and Care Services, has also called for urgent action.

He said: 'The stretch of road from the golf club entrance to the junction of Lavernock Road and Westbourne Road is the most dangerous in Penarth.

"I will be demanding that something be done to avoid more tragedies in future."

Maureen Joan Smalls, from Penarth, died in an accident at the junction of Lavernock Road and Charteris Close near Glamorganshire Golf Club on Wednesday, October 12.
