Alleygates proposal

PENARTH AM Lorraine Barrett has called for an alleygates scheme to be introduced in Penarth.

She used an Assembly short debate to highlight the problems of fly-tipping, youth annoyance and crime that affect parts of Penarth.

Mrs Barrett said: "Fly-tipping, graffiti and even burglary are just some of the problems that can occur when there is an open network of back alleys.

"Many Penarthians have contacted me to say that they are just fed up with these problems and want action to stop it.

"One simple and effective measure is alleygating. By placing gates at either end of the alleyway, burglary, fly tipping, youths causing annoyance and bin bag fires can be drastically reduced."

Mrs Barrett used the successful introduction of an alleygates scheme in Barry to support her case.

Lorraine said: "As a result of a pilot alleygating project funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, it is estimated that there has been a 58 percent reduction of house burglaries in parts of Barry."
